Ikzelf vaar 's winters normaliter met een full wetsuit van 5/6mm en daar over heen indien er wat wind is een windstopper jas (zoals de zeilers). Een long john in de winter (van gelijk welke dikte) zou ik ten zeerste af raden. De reden hiervoor is dat je oksels niet bedekt zijn. Na je hoofd verlies je het meeste warmte via je oksels en liezen. Het is altijd van belang je kledij af te stemmen op de watertemperatuur en niet op de luchttemperatuur. Onderkoeling loert binnen onze hobby steeds om de hoek. Sinds een jaartje geleden ben ik 's winters overgeschakeld naar een drysuit. Kostelijk maar aangenamer om te dragen dan een wetsuit. Een full wetsuit heeft het nadeel dat dit soms kan schuren onder de oksels. Aan alles zijn voor en nadelen (ook aan drysuit) maar het belangsrijkste is bovenstaande regel. Ook in de wintermaanden handschoenen dragen in neopreen. Van die moffen die op de peddel blijven zou ik afraden voor volgende reden. Als je kapseist (en dit kan de meest ervaren kajakker overkomen, zelfs op vlak water) moet je uit die moffen om een zelfredding uit te voeren. Binnen de minuut verlies je je fijne motoriek gezien de handen en vingers niet meer beschermd zijn tegen de koude. Een redding kan daardoor bemoeilijkt worden en zelfs in het ergste geval onmogelijk worden met de gevolgen van dien.
